Missoni Baia took its residents-focused initiatives into the digital space this spring and summer, bringing members of the design team together with future residents to start building a sense of community at the forthcoming collection of Edgewater condos. Via a series of webinars, people have been learning about the inspiration behind the tower’s striking facade, following along with the landscape architect’s creative process, and even getting a headstart on filing next year’s taxes in the Sunshine State. This way, residents will arrive at the building with a vested sense of ownership and community.

Asymptote Architecture’s Hani Rashid joined residents for a webinar in May, where he spoke at length about his design philosophy and how he applied his experiences in the art and architecture worlds to designing the glass jewel that is Missoni Baia. Rashid’s process began with probing what he called Miami’s “DNA of place,” which includes everything from the weather and the people to the surrounding buildings. In the end, his design for Missoni Baia was a foil to and an elevation of Miami’s usual high-rise style, serving as a pure expression of waterfront luxury.

Residents got an additional look into the inner workings of Missoni Baia’s design with another webinar in June, when two of Enea Garden Design’s Miami leads took time out of their day to talk through the process that produced the landscaping around Missoni Baia. The Enea team accepted the baton from Asymptote and carried it to the finish line, completing spaces like the grand lawn and the amenities deck with carefully chosen greenery and local plants. Ultimately, they created a singular expanse that will feel to residents like “their own private yard” and provide joy even when they are experiencing the Enea team’s contributions passively—for example, when they are simply standing beneath a palm tree and looking out at the unbroken expanse of Biscayne Bay.

Not all the webinars were about the beauty of Missoni Baia. The presentation by Robert Moore and Ceci Hassan of Baker McKenzie, which was a bit more pragmatic, focused on helping future residents make the transition to living in tax-friendly Florida. The details may seem daunting at first, but Moore and Hassan thoughtfully broke down the process by which residents of other states become Florida taxpayers and reap the benefits of the Sunshine State’s low tax burden.

Art on the Waterfront: Missoni Baia and PAMM

Today, we’re highlighting another of these waterfront wonders, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), which can be found just south of the shining Missoni Baia tower. The grand Pérez Art Museum Miami had humble beginnings. Founded in 1983 as a spartan exhibition hall for traveling shows, the museum, then simply called “the Center for the Fine Arts,” was constrained by its lack of space for a permanent collection. Its successor, the Miami Art Museum, was founded in 1996 in an effort to create a robust contemporary and modern art museum, but it took until the 2010s for the institution to find its final location on the Biscayne Bay waterfront.

The Pérez Art Museum Miami got its new name in 2013 along with a brand-new building from renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, whose design incorporated a grand staircase leading to the water, a series of wraparound terraces, and the building’s defining feature, a living roof by French botanist Patrick Blanc that features more than 80 kinds of subtropical plants. The three-story building has ample room for exhibits, large and small, including high galleries that can accommodate massive installations. The new museum created a central cultural space to which all art-loving Miamians can flock to experience an exultant permanent collection as well as a constantly rotating set of exhibitions.
